Jews earn like Episcopalians and vote like Puerto Ricans. – Milton Himmelfarb (1918-2006)
Milton Himmelfarb was a Jewish sociologist and author. By this oft-quoted remark, he meant to convey the idea that Jews, in his opinion, were perhaps America’s only major ethnic group that doesn’t become more conservative in its voting patterns as it becomes more economically successful.
Himmelfarb’s younger sister is the historian Gertrude Himmelfarb (born in 1922), the widow of political commentator Irving Kristol (1920-2009). “Himmelfarb,” by the way, is German for “color of the sky.”
